Savings Garden

a little of this and a little of that and a whole lot of savings.

Tips from HCW for this week 4/08/2009

It's shaping up to be a decent sale week.
Here's a look at what you should be watching for on sale this week. Enjoy!

Brands to watch this week: Kraft - celebration foods should be cheap this week. Think Philly cream cheese, marshmallows, Cool Whip, and cheese. Martinelli's Sparkling Cider - Typically only well-discounted at the holidays - these can go as cheap as 3 for $5. Cook's Ham - Usually a store offer for the whole spiral hams will be out this week. They tend to be a "when you spend" type offer, like ".99c per pound when you spend $25 on groceries".

Falling prices this week:
Beef - it's what's for dinner...or at least, if you like beef, now's the time to buy choice cuts at a good price for dinner. One of a handful of times during the year when beef cuts like whole rib roasts can fall as low as $3.99-$5.99 per pound depending on where you live. The trick here - get a whole roast. Use a $5 or $10 off coupon for an additional discount.
Have them separate the rib rack off the whole roast and save for bone-in beef ribs. Then have them cut the rest of the roast into 1/2 in to 3/4in steaks, and voila - you have really cheap rib eye steaks.

Butter & Margarine- all I can say is "WOW" - it's really nice to get 1-pound packs of butter for .99c to $1.49 each. Granted, it might be store-brand, but really, butter is easily interchanged. And if you use margarine, even better. Whenever butter is priced really low, margarine gets competitive, so you should be able to get this even cheaper than butter - retail market lows going as low as .49c for a pound.
Note, these usually have limits of one or two per trip (or it's an in-store coupon) but well worth making multiple trips.

Brunch fruits - melons, grapes, and pineapple - things you'd put on a fruit tray if you were making one.

Happy Shopping
